Managerial and organisational changes in FLASS for the new academic year
The faculty brings updates to several major managerial positions for the new academic year. These include the appointment of Dr Bill Yeung Chi-ho, Associate Professor of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES), as the Acting Associate Dean (Quality Assurance and Enhancement), and the appointment of Dr Prudence Lau Leung-kwok, Assistant Professor of Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, as the Acting Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning). Their new appointments are effective at 1 September 2023.
Meanwhile, Professor Eric Tsang Po-keung, Professor (Practice) of SES, has been appointed as Registrar, effective from 1 September 2023 to 30 June 2024. He is no longer acting as Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of the faculty or Head of SES starting from 1 September 2023. Dr Li Wai-chin, Associate Professor of the Department of SES, has been appointed as Associate Registrar, effective from 1 September 2023 to 30 June 2025. His appointment as Associate Dean (Quality Assurance and Enhancement) of the faculty is no longer in effect starting from 1 September 2023.
To replace Professor Tsang, Professor Keith Ho Wing-kei, Professor of SES, has been appointed as Acting Head of SES, effective from 1 September 2023 until further notice. On 1 July, the former Department of Social Sciences (SSC) and Department of Asian and Policy Studies (APS) were merged to form the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies (SSPS), with Dr Fox Hu Zhiyong appointed as the Acting Head and Associate Professor of the new department.
Professor Li Wai-keung, Dean of FLASS, said the merger of SSC and APS into a new department was implemented in accordance with the strategic direction of the University. The change will not only enhance the research and teaching capacity of the faculty in social sciences and policy studies, but will also optimise the organisation of manpower by synergising the resources of both departments. He said, “I believe all managerial and organisational changes have been carried out according to our management plan, without causing any hassle to the teaching and student bodies. I hope all the colleagues concerned will use their experience to lead the work coming under their new responsibilities.”
In his new capacity as the acting head of SES, Professor Keith Ho Wing-kei said he will continue to consolidate the department’s strengths in science and environmental science education, and in nurturing teaching professionals for science and general studies education. “SES boasts a strong team of scholars in environmental studies. We will continue to seek international collaboration opportunities with environmental scientists around the globe, particularly in areas related to environmental pollution like carbon neutralisation and micro-plastics,” the professor said.
Dr Fox Hu Zhiyong, Acting Head of SPSS, said the merger of APS and SSC was leveraged on the complementarity of the two departments. He said, “The merger enables academics from the two departments to join forces in organising workshops and conferences, to apply for research funding, and to co-publish articles. Secondly, by combining the networks of supporting partners from the two departments, SPSS can provide more internship opportunities to its students. The merger also facilitates scholars to conduct cross-disciplinary research projects that involve research focuses from the two departments.”
In the meantime, a number of teaching staff of FLASS have been appointed management roles in the Centre for Learning, Teaching, and Technology (LTTC). Dr Gary Cheng Kwok-shing, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, has been appointed as Executive Co-Director of LTTC. Dr Fu Hong, Assistant Professor of MIT, and Dr Henry So Chi-fuk, Senior Lecturer I of MIT, have been appointed as Associate Director of LTTC. All three appointments at LTTC are effective from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2025.
